EnviroStats!

Environmental statistics of impact.

About

This page is about the current status of Envirostats. Future developments mostly depend on additional contributions by others, which can be found in the Participate page. Please feel free to email the author if you have any questions regarding the site, via envirostats - at - hotmail - dot - com, written out the usual way. Thank you.

What is Envirostats?
Envirostats is primarily an environmental statistics blog of cited statistics found on-line, doubling as an on-line database in its organizational features. Statistics are analyzed for reliability and scrutinized for proper wording, and additional information is supplied with the statistic presentation. However, other vital environmental resources are also centralized at Envirostats, like PDF reports, original articles by the author and links to other environmental websites. Envirostats is kept in the spare time of its author, updated once per day.

What qualifies for environmental statistics?
Anything statistic about environmental impact qualifies to be on Envirostats. The impact statistics are obvious, but so are the ones that will have impact, like amount of clothes bought per person per year which will eventually become waste, or public opinion on an environmental issue. An open mind has to be kept on such matters. Demographics statistics are also included so the reader can create his/her own statistics to help with context, like dividing a total waste for a country per year by the population provided in another post to get a per person statistic that would be much more meaningful. This is done when time permits but it is not always feasible due to the author’s time constraints.

What does not qualify for environmental statistics?
Statistical projections for the future are not blogged here unless they are news forecasting a short term inevitability from an important trend happening. Humans are bad enough at forecasting the future as it is, never mind using oversimplified extrapolation models of statistical samples to do it. Statistics on performance or features of products are also not reported here. If a new product is that remarkable, an article will be written about it and the associated statistics will be included within, although the author does not foresee many such articles but will share articles found on what he deems are nice products to know about via the Author’s Shared RSS Feeds found in the Links menu on the right of the page.

Who oversees Envirostats?
Envirostats was the creation and is a pro bono personal project work of Minh Tan, a public servant in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, who has a physical sciences and statistical analysis background and experience. Ethics and non-association full disclosure statements for content and responsibility of this site being the author’s and not his employer, as advised by the author’s employer, are located at the end of this page.

Why was Envirostats created?
Envirostats was created to inform, compile, analyze and classify reliable environmental statistics found mostly on-line. The statistics themselves inform. They are compiled for convenience from centralization. They are analyzed to help provide authority because statistics can be misleading or simply misinterpreted when they are presented. They are classified for ease of searching.

Are the statistics presented reliable?
Statistics presented on Envirostats are scrutinized by the author and are generally deemed reliable for general and professional consumption, meaning knowledge/awareness for the general public and professional use. However, many statistics are not acceptable for scientific academic use. A small percentage of the statistics presented are mainly for novelty value or to demonstrate the scope of a situation where no other statistic had been encountered at the time of posting, and are cautioned against professional use, noted in their respective postings.

Should this site be referenced?
For bloggers, please feel free to reference this site or link to it, though it is recommended for your credibility, to reference the source link. For students who found something on this site for homework, please do NOT reference this site but rather reference the source link for the statistic used, or search for the original source if the link were not to the original source. Always quote original sources for homework, academia or secondary schools. Only reference the site to share the resource with your friends, in which case, please do!

Where are Envirostats’ statistics obtained?
Just about all of Envirostats’ statistics are either found on-line or via electronic means so they could be linked or carried on-line for easy reference validation. Most statistics are also very recent, being either breaking news or among the latest available on the subject, even if they might be several years old. Mention will be made where it is known a statistic is not necessarily the most up-to-date.

Are primary sources of statistics listed?
Envirostats’ statistics are always cited, often with the on-line source as close to the primary source as can be found by links from where each statistic was found. Sometimes, extra effort is put in to find the original source where the author deemed it necessary to check reliability of any aspect surrounding the statistic. Lack of time forbids this to be done for all statistics posted, although if any notable question remained about a statistic, it will not be posted for lack of reliability.

What about statistics posted that are superceded by new ones?
The beauty of the blog format is that it lists posts in chronological order. A new statistic that supercedes an old one will appear first in any search, by keywords or listed in statistical categories. Please refer to the Search Tips page for help with searching for a statistic on Envirostats, or even ones not on Envirostats but which could be found at the source of a similar statistic. There are far more statistics associated with Envirostats than meets the eye, literally.

Why are there so many Nova Scotian statistics?
The author resides in Nova Scotia and has an interest on environmental statistics of his province of residence. Most Nova Scotian statistics presented have equivalents for all other Canadian provinces and some for the territories. Checking the source will show provincial tables with those other provinces’ figures. It is both tedious and monotonous to blog the same thing for each province and territory, and the tables from PDF sources don’t copy well to blog entries. Canadian national statistics equivalent to Nova Scotia ones are posted separately because they also have uses to the author. Please see the Search Tips page for recommendations on finding environmental statistics from Canadian provinces other than Nova Scotia, which are accessible from the sources cited and not the blog entries directly.
